Bottle feeding puppies - Feeding and care of the new born puppy

Newborn pups, new born puppy care and bottle feeding puppies & caring for the mother dog.

When your mother dog is unable to feed all her babies, this site will get you started feeding  puppies and caring for the newborn pups.

If you’re freaking out click here to go right to the list of items you need to feed the babies.

Bottle feeding newborn puppies is a site with all the information you need to raise new born pups when they mother can't or won't feed them.

My Hawaiian Vacation was spent feeding nine pups!

I went on vacation expecting to lay on the beach with a Mai Tai in my hand watching the Dolphins in the waves. Ha!

Instead I had the wonderfully enriching experience of raising pups whose mother did not have enough milk to feed all nine puppies! That's right. Nine pups. The cutest little 9 day old babies I have ever seen.newborn pups and their mother Tina who was only able to feed 4 puppies and they were the biggest pups

Here is the Mother, her name is Tina and this picture was taken just before I left for my trip back home.

At nine days the pups eyes were closed and they were very tiny.  They barely fit in my hand.  They can’t see and if not fed enough they will be crying constantly.

A big clue because a happy puppy is one that is sleeping!

This guide will help you bring up new born pups by hand.  It will save their life and will enrich your life.

I can't tell you how satisfied I felt to see these little guys grow and become healthy.

Here are the things you will need and I got them at the local Longs Drug Store and the local grocery store.

  1. Premie baby bottles
  2. Canned or frozen goats or evaporated milk
  3. Paper Towels
  4. 12”x 12” cotton towels or clean rags for cleaning
  5. Extra Nipples and a sterilized needle
  6. A babies toy pool lined with towels.
  7. A friend to help out

During my their third week on my “vacation” their eyes opened and pretty soon I could see that they were starting to recognize me.  When I started getting all the milk and towels ready for these baby dogs they would start crying and crawl their way into the room I was in.

It was a little army of pups, crawling, crying and whining and following the sound of the first puppy being fed.  It was the cutest thing I ever saw.

You should have seen the look on the mother’s dog face.  It was like “Well what am I, chopped liver?

All the babies got fed, but it took two hours to feed nine puppies. Best to get a friend to help you. It will cut the time in half.

I always started with the smallest puppy first and let the big guys wait for their feedings.

Pretty soon the smallest and weakest babies will gain back their strength and although they will usually never be as big as the well fed pups, they will be well on their way to a happy life of lots of good milk to drink and less stress.   You can see the stress on the mother’s face.

Also pups need to be clean.  Help the mother out by washing the puppy dirty spots with warm water, not hot, not cold, just nice and warm be sure to put them in a warm towel so they can dry off.  The mom might even lick them to help the drying process.  Do not put pups outside if they are wet.

Try to keep the area they are in as clean as possible by mopping the floor just after they have been fed and are sleeping.

Do your laundry now because you will need fresh clean towels about 3 times a day.

Give the mother dog some extra loving because suddenly, she is being ignored because you are spending all your time with the pups.

Tina was very good about this.  She knew I was helping but she had this look of puzzlement on her face.  She knew something was wrong and I swear she was blaming herself.
